Entrepreneurships

The Young Entrepreneurs Program (YEP) was initially founded through the Dad Fund, in conjunction with Evo Media, Sierra Nevada University and College; The United States Fund; and the Northern Nevada International Centre.

YEP aims at giving young entrepreneurs the opportunity of mentorship with businesses and tertiary institutions based in the United States of America.

This was done by offering a 5-week mentorship/exchange period for South African entrepreneurs to be placed with specific institutions as part of a skills development program.

In March 2011, the second intake of YEP participants traveled to the USA after the first intake in February 2010.

The Young Entrepreneurs Program (YEP)

 was open to:

  • South African entrepreneurs between the age of 21 and 35

  • All Races

  • Male and Female

  • New or Current Business

  • Must have a valid passport

  • Business industries include Service,  Events, Travel & Tourism & Education

Other elements of the program included, but were not limited to, the following:

  • Training & Development

  • Mentorship & Coaching

  • Practical Internships

  • Business Plan Development

  • Assistance with Access to Finance

  • Formation of an Alumni Support Group for on-going support and sharing

  • “Give back” Outreach programs

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) South Africa 2009 report indicated that there is still:

  • a low level of overall education and training

  • social factors that do not encourage entrepreneurship as a career path of choice

  • lack of access to finance, particularly in the micro-financing  arena; and

  • a difficult regulatory environment
